CV Akagi Carrier Division 1 Air Wing – Zeros, Vals & Kates

This decal set represents the early-war air group of the Imperial Japanese Navy carrier Akagi, flagship of Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo’s carrier striking force. Akagi operated with Kaga in Carrier Division 1 and carried Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighters, Aichi D3A “Val” dive bombers, and Nakajima B5N “Kate” torpedo/level bombers.

Historical Context

Akagi served as one of the principal carriers in the attack on Pearl Harbor and continued in the rapid Japanese offensives of early 1942. At the Battle of Midway in June 1942, Akagi was fatally damaged by U.S. Navy dive bombers and subsequently scuttled.
