Historical Context

The IAI Nesher was an Israeli-built delta-wing fighter closely related to the Mirage 5 concept and developed to provide Israel with a strike-capable fighter after French embargo restrictions disrupted aircraft deliveries. The Nesher entered Israeli Air Force service in the early 1970s.

Its simple, fast, low-level strike design proved highly effective and it played a major role during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

Key Aspects of the IAI Nesher History:

• Development and Origin: Built by Israel Aircraft Industries using the Mirage 5 configuration as its basis, optimized for visual-range combat and ground attack with Israeli equipment.

• Military and Combat Operations:

  • Israeli Air Force: Neshers served as fighter-bombers and interceptors during the early 1970s.

  • Yom Kippur War – 1973: Nesher units flew intensive combat missions in both air-to-air and strike roles and achieved numerous aerial victories.

• Foreign Operators:

  • Argentina: Former Israeli Neshers were refurbished and exported as Daggers, later seeing combat in the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War.

• Upgrades and Retirement: The Nesher was replaced in Israeli service by the more advanced Kfir. Exported aircraft continued serving for many years after leaving Israel.

• Design and Armament: Single-seat delta-wing fighter-bomber with twin 30 mm cannon and external stations for bombs, fuel tanks and infrared-guided air-to-air missiles.
