Historical Context
The IAI Dagger was the Argentine designation for refurbished Israeli Aircraft Industries Nesher fighters, an Israeli development of the Mirage 5 concept optimized for high-speed day fighter-bomber operations. Argentina acquired the aircraft beginning in the late 1970s to strengthen the Fuerza Aérea Argentina's strike and fighter capability.
The first Dagger unit was formed in 1978, with deliveries continuing into the early 1980s. The type became one of Argentina's principal fast-jet strike aircraft during the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War.

Development and Origin: The Dagger originated with the IAI Nesher, itself closely based on the Dassault Mirage 5. Its delta wing, Atar-series turbojet, simple strike-oriented avionics, and high speed made it well suited to visual-range fighter and low-level attack missions.
Military and Combat Operations:
Argentine Air Force: The Dagger equipped Grupo 6 de Caza and was deployed during the 1978 Beagle crisis before becoming a major combat type in 1982.
Falklands/Malvinas War – 1982: Daggers operated from southern mainland bases including Río Grande and San Julián, flying low-level attacks against British naval and ground targets. Dagger formations attacked Royal Navy ships from the opening day of air combat on May 1 and remained heavily engaged throughout the campaign.
Foreign Operators: The Dagger designation was unique to Argentina. The underlying Nesher had previously served with Israel before the airframes were refurbished and transferred to Argentina.
Upgrades and Retirement: Surviving Daggers were progressively rebuilt under the Finger modernization program, receiving major improvements to navigation, attack, radar-warning, and cockpit systems. Finger variants remained part of Argentina's Mirage-family force until final retirement in 2015.
Design and Armament: A single-seat delta-wing fighter-bomber, the Dagger combined high speed with strong low-level strike performance. Typical weapons included 30 mm cannon, conventional bombs, external fuel tanks, and infrared air-to-air missiles.
