Historical Context
The McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II, known in Israeli service as the Kurnass (“Sledgehammer”), became one of the Israeli Air Force's most important heavy fighters and strike aircraft. Israel began receiving F-4Es in 1969.
Its long range, large weapons load, powerful radar and two-seat crew gave Israel a major increase in all-weather interception and deep-strike capability.
Key Aspects of the F-4E Kurnass History:
Development and Origin: The F-4E added an internal M61 Vulcan cannon to the Phantom family and combined high speed with radar-guided missiles and a heavy strike load.
Military and Combat Operations:
War of Attrition: Israeli Phantoms quickly entered combat against Egyptian and Syrian targets after delivery.
Yom Kippur War – 1973: Kurnass units flew air-defense, suppression, interdiction and deep-strike missions under extremely intense combat conditions.
Lebanon: Israeli F-4Es continued to serve in strike and support roles during later operations over Lebanon.
Foreign Operators: The F-4E served with many nations, but the Kurnass designation and Israeli avionics/weapons integrations were specific to Israeli service.
Upgrades and Retirement: Israel modernized selected aircraft under the Kurnass 2000 program with upgraded avionics, displays and precision-strike capability. The type was retired from Israeli service in 2004.
Design and Armament: Twin-engine, two-seat multirole fighter with radar-guided and infrared missiles, an internal 20 mm cannon and a very large range of bombs and precision weapons.
