The Hawker Hunter Mk.6 (also known as the F.6) is widely regarded as the definitive version of this classic British transonic jet fighter. Developed by Hawker Siddeley in the mid-1950s, it corrected the power and handling limitations of earlier marks, becoming the backbone of the Royal Air Force's fighter squadrons.
Key Specifications & Performance
- Engine: Powered by the Rolls-Royce Avon Mk.203 or 207, providing roughly 10,150 lbs of thrust, a significant upgrade over the earlier Mk.100 series engines.
- Armament: Standard fit included four 30mm ADEN cannons in a removable pack. While it lacked guided missiles in standard RAF service, some were later used for testing SRAAM (Short Range Air-to-Air Missile) technology.
- Design Changes: Featured a distinctive "saw-tooth" leading edge on the wings to improve high-speed handling and stability.
- Speed: Transonic in level flight but capable of reaching supersonic speeds in a dive.
