Historical Context
The Harrier GR.1 was the world's first operational vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) strike aircraft. Developed by Hawker Siddeley in the 1960s, it officially entered service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) on April 1, 1969. 
Key Technical Features
Engine: Powered by a single Rolls-Royce Pegasus turbofan engine.
Thrust Vectoring: Utilizes four rotating nozzles to direct engine thrust, allowing for vertical takeoff, hovering, and transition to conventional flight.
Role: Primarily designed for close air support (CAS) and reconnaissance.
Deployment: Many were stationed in West Germany during the Cold War to operate from hidden, dispersed forest "hides" if airbases were destroyed. 
Service & Evolution
First Flight: December 28, 1967.
GR.3 Upgrade: Most GR.1 and GR.1A models were eventually converted to the Harrier GR.3 standard, which featured improved sensors and a laser rangefinder.
US Adoption: The U.S. Marine Corps adopted the design as the AV-8A Harrier.

Development and Origin: The first-generation Harrier was the world’s first operational fixed-wing V/STOL combat aircraft. The GR.1 established the concept in RAF service and the GR.3 added improved sensors, avionics, and attack capability.
Military and Combat Operations: RAF Harriers were deployed widely from dispersed and austere sites. The GR.3 saw combat during the 1982 Falklands War, operating from carriers and forward locations in the ground-attack role.
Foreign Operators: Related first-generation Harrier variants were operated by the United States, Spain, and other services, although RAF GR marks were specifically British configurations.
Upgrades and Retirement: GR.1 aircraft were progressively improved into later marks before the first-generation RAF Harrier force gave way to second-generation Harrier II variants.
Design and Armament: Typical weapons included twin 30 mm ADEN cannon pods, bombs, rockets, external fuel tanks, laser-guided bombs, and—during some deployments—Sidewinder air-to-air missiles.
