The HAL Tejas Mk1 is operated exclusively by the Indian Air Force (IAF). It entered service in 2015 and is India's first indigenous supersonic fighter to enter full operational service. As of 2025–2026, the Mk1 is operational with two frontline fighter squadrons.
Operational Squadrons
No. 45 Squadron IAF
- First operational Tejas squadron.
- Formed with the Tejas in July 2016.
- Based at Sulur Air Force Station.
- Missions include air superiority, combat air patrol, and precision strike.
No. 18 Squadron IAF
- Re-equipped with the Tejas Mk1 in 2020.
- Based at Naliya Air Force Station.
- Performs air defense and ground-attack missions.
Areas of Operation
The Tejas Mk1 is deployed in two strategically important regions:
- Southern India from Sulur, covering the Indian Ocean region and southern air-defense responsibilities.
- Western India from Naliya, near the border with Pakistan, providing rapid-response air-defense and strike capabilities.
Combat Use
Unlike the HF-24 Marut, the Tejas Mk1 has not yet been used in a declared combat operation or war, although it regularly participates in operational deployments, air-defense alerts, exercises, and weapons trials.
