The HAL HF-24 Marut was used exclusively by the Indian Air Force. It was India's first indigenous jet fighter and entered service in 1967, remaining operational until 1990.
 
Squadrons That Operated the Marut
The HF-24 equipped three Indian Air Force fighter squadrons:
No. 10 Squadron ("Daggers") – first operational Marut squadron, beginning in 1969.
No. 220 Squadron ("Desert Tigers") – operated the Marut from 1969 to 1981.
No. 31 Squadron ("Lions") – began operating the Marut in 1974 and was the last squadron to retire the type in 1990.
 
Bases Where It Served
The Marut was primarily based in western India, including:
Jodhpur Air Force Station, Rajasthan
Uttarlai Air Force Station (now Uttarlai AFS), Rajasthan
These bases positioned the aircraft near the border with Pakistan.
 
Combat Use
The HF-24 Marut saw combat during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. It was employed mainly in the ground-attack role and played a notable part in the Battle of Longewala, where Maruts and Hawker Hunters attacked Pakistani armored forces advancing into Rajasthan. The aircraft flew more than 300 combat sorties during the war and earned a reputation for toughness and survivability.
