Historical Information
Béarn began as the fifth battleship of the French Normandie class before being converted into an aircraft carrier during the 1920s. Completed as France’s first aircraft carrier, she played an important role in developing French naval aviation but was too slow for effective front-line fleet-carrier operations by the beginning of World War II. During the war, Béarn was used largely as an aircraft transport, including missions carrying aircraft purchased in the United States. After joining the Free French side, she was refitted in the United States and continued serving as an aircraft transport.
