The FMA IA-58 Pucará was an Argentine-designed twin-turboprop counter-insurgency and light attack aircraft created for operations from short, rough, and austere airfields. The prototype first flew on August 20, 1969, and the type entered Argentine Air Force service during the 1970s.
Unlike Argentina's fast jets, the Pucará was optimized for low-speed battlefield support, armed reconnaissance, counter-insurgency, and close air support.

Argentine Air Force: The Pucará became the FAA's principal indigenous light attack aircraft and was used for internal security, training, border, and battlefield-support duties.
Falklands/Malvinas War – 1982: Pucarás were the first Argentine combat aircraft deployed to the islands on April 2. They operated from Port Stanley and smaller improvised fields, flying ground-attack, reconnaissance, and support missions where their short-field capability was especially valuable.
Foreign Operators:
Uruguay: Operated the Pucará as a light attack and training aircraft.
Colombia: Used the type for counter-insurgency duties.
Sri Lanka: Employed Pucarás operationally during its civil conflict.
Upgrades and Retirement: Argentina progressively withdrew the original attack version after decades of service while developing the IA-58H/Fénix modernization concept for surveillance and patrol roles.
Design and Armament: The Pucará was a two-seat, twin-turboprop aircraft with built-in cannon and machine guns plus external stations for rockets, bombs, and other stores. Its robust structure and ability to operate close to the battlefield distinguished it from conventional fast jets.
