Historical Information

The Grumman F8F Bearcat was developed as a compact carrier fighter intended to improve on the F6F Hellcat. Its design emphasized low weight, rapid climb, and pilot visibility through a bubble canopy. The prototype first flew on August 21, 1944, and VF-19 became the first fleet squadron to accept the aircraft in May 1945.

World War II ended before the Bearcat reached combat. It subsequently served with U.S. Navy fighter units during the transition to jet aircraft and became the last propeller-driven type flown by the Blue Angels. Bearcats also served abroad, including with French forces in Indochina and the South Vietnamese Air Force.
