The F3D Skyknight was primarily used by the U.S. Marine Corps as a carrier-based and land-based night fighter during the Korean War. It later served as an electronic warfare platform (EF-10B) in the Vietnam War and was used for reconnaissance during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
Key Roles and Usage:
- Korean War (1950–1953): Operated by VMF(N)-513 ("Flying Nightmares") to escort B-29 bombers and hunt night intruders, destroying more enemy aircraft than any other Navy/Marine type in that conflict.
- Vietnam War (1960s): Converted to the EF-10B, it acted as a primary electronic countermeasures (ECM) platform to jam enemy radar.
- Cuban Missile Crisis (1962): Used by Marine Composite Reconnaissance Squadron 2 to monitor Soviet radar-guided anti-aircraft defenses.
- Testing: Served as a test bed for the AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missile.
The Skyknight was nicknamed "Willy the Whale" and was the only Korean War-era jet fighter to also serve in the Vietnam War.
