The F-8E Crusader, known as the "Last of the Gunfighters," was primarily used as a carrier-based air superiority fighter by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps (1957–1976), playing a crucial role in the Vietnam War with an 18-3 MiG kill ratio. It was also used by the French Navy (F-8E(FN) variant) and the Philippine Air Force.
- Vietnam War: The F-8E served heavily in combat, protecting bombers and engaging MiG-17s.
- Carrier Operations: Used extensively by the US Navy on Essex-class and larger carriers, as well as by the French Navy on the Clemenceau and Foch.
- Cuban Missile Crisis: Photo-reconnaissance versions (RF-8A) conducted critical, low-level reconnaissance missions.
- Other Roles: Served in the US Marine Corps for ground attack and was used by the Philippines from 1983-1991.
The F-8E is notable for having improved ground-attack capabilities over earlier models, including the ability to carry Zuni rockets and AGM-12 Bullpup missiles.
