The F-89H Scorpion was used primarily by the US Air Force and Air National Guard for continental air defense in the late 1950s, particularly in remote areas like Alaska, Iceland, and Greenland to counter Soviet bombers. Delivered in 1956, it acted as a Cold War interceptor with wingtip pods, patrolling the northern US against potential incursions.
Key Locations and Usage:
- Active Defense: Deployed at various USAF bases across the continental United States to defend against bombers.
- Northern Deployment: Stationed in critical northern locations, including Alaska (e.g., 65th FIS, Elmendorf AFB).
- Active Duty Locations: Served with units at locations such as Hamilton AFB, CA, Paine AFB, WA, Portland IAP, OR, and Presque Isle, ME.
- Air National Guard: Later transferred to ANG units, including in Oregon and Wisconsin.
- International: Deployed to locations like Keflavik Airport, Iceland.
The F-89H was designed with complex, massive rocket loads (carrying 42 rockets) for bomber interception before being replaced in the early 1960s
