The North American F-86K "Sabre Dog" was an all-weather interceptor used primarily by NATO-allied European nations and the US during the 1950s and 1960s to defend against high-altitude bombers. Key operators included West Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Norway, and the US Air Force.

Key Locations and Usage:

  • West Germany: Acquired 88 U.S.-built F-86Ks between 1957 and 1958, serving in units such as Jagdgeschwader 75/74.
  • Italy: Fiat manufactured 221 F-86Ks under license, which were used by the Aeronautica Militare's 1° Stormo, 51° Aerobrigata, and 4° Aerobrigata.
  • France: Operated 62 Fiat-built F-86Ks between 1956 and 1962 for all-weather interception.
  • Netherlands & Norway: Operated the "Kaasjager" (Cheese Hunter) variant.
  • United States: The 93d Fighter-Interceptor Squadron utilized F-86Ks to protect the Central Air Defense Zone at Kirtland Air Force Base in 1952.
  • Other: Later, some models were used by the Honduran Air Force after being acquired from Venezuela.

The F-86K was developed from the F-86D, featuring a modified fire control system and four  cannons instead of rockets.
