The F-86F-40 Sabre, featuring6-3" wing extensions and slats for improved maneuvering, was used extensively by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) from the late 1950s until 1982. It was also operated by the US Air Force, exported to allies like Pakistan, and produced under license by Mitsubishi in Japan.

Key Usage Areas and Roles:

  • Japan (JASDF): The F-86F-40 was the premier variant utilized by Japan, with many modified to carry AIM-9B Sidewinder missiles,. They served as front-line interceptors, with the last being withdrawn in 1982. The JASDF's "Blue Impulse" display team also used this variant.
  • United States (USAF): Used by the USAF before being exported under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP) to allies. Some were modified in the field for reconnaissance (RF-86F).
  • Pakistan: Operated by the Pakistan Air Force, where they were used in combat, notably during the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War.
  • Export Markets: Many F-86F-40s were transferred to other nations, including Argentina, which used them for fighter-bomber roles until 1986.

Significance:
The F-86F-40 is considered one of the best production Sabre variants due to its superior maneuverability compared to earlier F-86F 30 models.
