The F-86D Sabre "Sabre Dog" was an all-weather interceptor primarily used by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and Air National Guard from 1951 to the mid-1960s to defend against Soviet bombers. It was stationed across the United States and in Europe, with key deployments including NATO allies like West Germany and Turkey.
Key locations and usage:
- USA (Active Duty/ANG): Used extensively for continental air defense by Air Defense Command units, such as the 54th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (South Dakota), 63rd FIS (Michigan), and California Air National Guard.
- Overseas: Deployed for NATO air defense in Europe, including sites in Turkey.
- International Operators: Used by the SFR Yugoslav Air Force (until 1974), Japan (ASDF), and other allies.
While the F-86A/E/F models fought in Korea, the F-86D was a distinct interceptor version with a radar-nosed, rocket-armed configuration used for defense rather than ground-attack combat.
