The Grumman F7F Tigercat was primarily used by the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy. Although arriving too late for World War II combat, it served as a night fighter, ground-attack aircraft, and reconnaissance plane during the early stages of the Korean War. It was later used as an aerial fire bomber.
Key aspects of its use include:
- Korean War Combat: The Marine Corps squadron VMF(N)-513 "Flying Nightmares" used the F7F-3N for night interdiction and fighter missions, recording only two aerial victories.
- Carrier Operations: Designed for Midway-class carriers, it was mostly land-based, though the F7F-4N was certified for carrier use.
- Fire Bomber: After military service, many were used in the western U.S. for dropping fire retardant in the 1960s.
- Service Period: The aircraft was operational from 1945 and officially retired from the military by 1954.
