The Northrop F-5E Tiger II was a widely exported American light fighter used extensively by U.S. allies and as an "aggressor" training aircraft by the U.S. Navy, Marines, and Air Force. Key operators included South Vietnam, Iran, Taiwan, South Korea, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia, with combat experience in the Vietnam War and the Iran-Iraq War.

Key Usage and Roles:

  • U.S. Aggressor Training: The F-5E was famously used by the U.S. Air Force (Nellis AFB) and Navy (Top Gun) to simulate MiG-21 Soviet tactics in aerial combat exercises.
  • Vietnam War: Though the F-5E was finalized just as the war ended, earlier F-5A/C models were used heavily in the "Skoshi Tiger" evaluation and by the South Vietnamese Air Force.
  • International Users: Over 1,400 F-5E/F models were produced, largely for foreign military sales to countries like Iran, South Korea, and Switzerland.
  • Combat Actions:
    • Vietnam: Used by South Vietnam for attack/reconnaissance.
    • Iran-Iraq War: Iranian F-5Es were actively used.
    • Other: Saudi Arabia used them, likely in the Gulf War.

Known for its high maneuverability, reliability, and low maintenance, the F-5E acted as a cost-effective fighter to fill gaps in air defense for many nations.
