The F-5N Tiger II is used by the US Navy and US Marine Corps as an adversary trainer for tactical air combat training. These single-seat fighters, largely acquired from Switzerland, are used to simulate low-to-mid level threats at NAS Key West (VFC-111), NAS Fallon (VFC-13), and MCAS Yuma (VMFT-401).

  • NAS Key West, Florida (VFC-111 "Sun Downers"): Operates F-5N and "FrankenTiger" F-5F variants.
  • NAS Fallon, Nevada (VFC-13 "Saints"): Top Gun training base.
  • MCAS Yuma, Arizona (VMFT-401 "Snipers"): Marine Corps aggressor squadron. 

     

Contextual Usage:

  • Role: The F-5N is a modernized version of the F-5E, used specifically for "aggressor" or "adversary" training, simulating the size and agility of enemy aircraft in combat training.
  • Origin: The U.S. Navy purchased 32 F-5E/F aircraft from the Swiss Air Force, which were refurbished and designated as F-5N/F.
  • Usage: They provide, low-flight time, high-performance training to prepare pilots for aerial combat.
