The F-5A Freedom Fighter was primarily used as a cost-effective, versatile export fighter by U.S. allies during the Cold War. It saw significant combat in the Vietnam War ("Skoshi Tiger" program) and was used by nations including Iran, South Korea, Greece, Norway, the Philippines, Thailand, and Taiwan.
Key Usage Areas and Roles:
- Vietnam War: The U.S. Air Force deployed F-5As (designated F-5C) in 1965 for combat trials (Operation Skoshi Tiger). These were later transferred to the Republic of Vietnam Air Force (VNAF).
- Export and Allies: Used by Greece (first European operator), Iran, Norway, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan to modernize their air forces.
- Training & Aggressor Roles: Used in small numbers by the U.S. Air Force and Navy as "aggressor" aircraft in simulations to mimic Soviet MiG-21s in training.
- Active Conflict: Used by Iran during the Iran-Iraq War and Ethiopia against Somalia.
The F-5A was known for its reliability and maneuverability, serving in fighter, ground attack, and reconnaissance roles.
