Historical Context
The F-4E Phantom II, featuring an internal M61A1 Vulcan cannon and upgraded engines, was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force as a premier air superiority and ground-attack fighter, starting in the late 1960s. It saw extensive combat in the Vietnam War, the 1991 Gulf War (as a Wild Weasel), and was heavily used by international allies, including Israel (Arab-Israeli conflicts) and Iran. 
Key Areas and Conflicts of Use:
Vietnam War (1965–1973): The F-4E was deployed to counter maneuverable MiG fighters, with its built-in gun designed specifically from combat experience.
Middle East (Israel & Iran): Israel used F-4Es extensively during the Yom Kippur War and other Arab-Israeli conflicts. Iran used its substantial F-4E fleet during the Iran-Iraq War.
The Gulf War (1991): Used for Wild Weasel missions (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses).
International Operators: The F-4E variant was operated by countries including Greece, Turkey, South Korea, and Japan.
U.S. Operations: While Navy/Marines used different F-4 variants, the USAF primarily used the F-4E (and other models) through the 1980s before transitioning to F-15s and F-16s. 
The F-4E was the last of the major Phantom variants and remained in service with some nations (such as Greece and Turkey) long after the U.S. retired its fleet in 1996.
