The F-4B Phantom II was primarily used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps from 1961 to the 1980s, serving as a carrier-based fighter-bomber. It was heavily engaged in the Vietnam War, performing combat air patrols, interceptor missions, and air-to-ground strikes.

Key deployments included:

  • Vietnam War (1964–1973): First operated by VF-74, they were key in the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964 and throughout the Vietnam conflict, flying from aircraft carriers such as USS ForrestalEnterprise, and Kitty Hawk.
  • Marine Corps Operations: Marines deployed F-4Bs to land bases in South Vietnam and from carriers like the USS America starting in 1965.
  • Cold War Patrols: Stationed on aircraft carriers globally, including the Cuban Missile Crisis alert in 1962.

The F-4B was eventually replaced in the late 1970s and 1980s by the F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
