The F/A-18E Super Hornet is the primary carrier-based strike fighter of the U.S. Navy, used extensively in combat operations in the Middle East, including Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria (against ISIS) since 2002. It replaced the F-14 Tomcat and has been used for air-to-air combat, precision ground strikes, and close air support.
Key Areas of Operation and Use:
- Combat Operations: First used in combat during Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2002-2003. Later used in the Syrian conflict and against ISIS.
- Carrier Deployments: The F/A-18E/F serves as the backbone of U.S. carrier air wings.
- International Users: The Royal Australian Air Force operates the F/A-18F, and the Kuwait Air Force has ordered the Super Hornet.
- Recent Activity: Super Hornets have been active in the Red Sea and surrounding areas (around 2023-2026), according to U.S. Naval reports, specifically in operations against Houthi forces.
The Super Hornet is planned to remain in service with the U.S. Navy until the 2030s
