The F-14 Tomcat was used primarily by the United States Navy (1974–2006) as a carrier-based air superiority fighter, fleet defender, and later a strike platform. It was also exported to the Imperial Iranian Air Force (later the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force) in 1976, where it remains in limited service today.
Key Operational Locations & Conflicts:
- Vietnam: Early combat air patrols at the end of the war.
- Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988): Heavily utilized by Iran for combat air patrols, intercepting Iraqi aircraft, and protecting infrastructure, achieving a high kill ratio.
- Mediterranean Sea & Persian Gulf: Active in US Navy operations against Libya in the 1980s.
- Gulf War (1991): Provided combat air patrols and reconnaissance.
- Balkans & Iraq/Afghanistan (1990s–2006): Served in combat roles, including enforcement of no-fly zones, strike operations, and reconnaissance.
Usage Highlights:
- Carrier Operations: Designed to defend US Navy carrier battle groups.
- Iran Usage: Used as a land-based interceptor, with at least 160 kills claimed during the Iran-Iraq war.
