The F-117 Nighthawk was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force for precision strike missions in heavily defended areas, seeing combat in Panama (1989), the Gulf War (1991), Kosovo (1999), and Iraq (2003). It was renowned for its role in Operation Desert Storm, flying over 1,200 sorties to strike high-value, hardened targets.
Key Deployment Locations & Conflicts
- Panama (Operation Just Cause, 1989): First combat use, targeting military barracks.
- Iraq/Kuwait (Gulf War/Desert Storm, 1990-1991): Used extensively to destroy critical command and control centers, communications, and hardened aircraft shelters.
- Yugoslavia (Operation Allied Force, 1999): Conducted air campaigns over Kosovo, where one F-117 was shot down.
- Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2003): Opened the conflict with air strikes on Baghdad.

Base and Service Details
- Initial Basing: The 4450th Tactical Group originally operated the F-117 at Tonopah Test Range Airport, Nevada from 1984 to 1992.
- Retirement: Officially retired from active service in 2008, but some aircraft have remained in use for testing and training, with efforts to keep them flying until 2034.
