The F-105F Thunderchief was primarily used by the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War as a two-seat, high-speed fighter-bomber and specialized "Wild Weasel" aircraft for suppressing enemy air defenses. Operating from bases in Thailand, such as Korat and Takhli, they played a crucial role in SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) missions.

Key Deployment Details:

  • Role: The F-105F/G variant served as a Wild Weasel to locate and destroy Soviet-supplied SA-2 surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites in North Vietnam.
  • Combat Location: Heavily involved in the "Rolling Thunder" campaign over North Vietnam, flying deep-strike missions.
  • Key Bases: Primarily operated from Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base and Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand.
  • Capabilities: The two-seat F-105F could carry up to 14,000 pounds of ordnance, including bombs, rockets, and AGM-45 Shrike or AGM-78 Standard anti-radiation missiles.
  • Losses: The F-105 saw immense action, with over 350 total F-105 (-D and -F) models lost in combat, mostly to anti-aircraft fire and SAMs.

Following their service in Vietnam, some F-105s continued to serve in the United States with Air Force units, including the 23rd Tactical Fighter Wing, and later with the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve until the mid-1980s.
