The Dewoitine D. 520 was the most capable modern fighter to enter substantial French service during the Battle of France. Fast, maneuverable, and armed with a 20 mm cannon firing through the propeller hub plus wing-mounted machine guns, it was one of the few French fighters able to meet the Messerschmitt Bf 109E on broadly competitive terms.
