Historical Information

Greek military aviation has used blue and white national colors since its earliest years. After World War I, Greek aircraft adopted blue national roundels with corresponding tail markings. When the separate Army and Naval aviation organizations were unified around 1930–1931, the lighter blue associated with Army aviation became the basis for the unified air force's national markings.

Earlier Greek aircraft commonly displayed the national colors as rudder stripes. During the 1960s, this treatment evolved into the more compact fin flash used on later aircraft. The standard fin flash is composed of three vertical bands in blue, white, and blue.

The Greek fin flash has appeared on aircraft representing the Hellenic Air Force's transition from early postwar jets to modern NATO combat aircraft, including the F-84, F-86, F-104, F-4 Phantom II, Mirage F1, Mirage 2000, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and Rafale.
