Historical Context

The Dassault-Breguet Super Étendard was a French carrier-borne strike aircraft developed as an improved successor to the Étendard IVM. The prototype first flew on October 28, 1974, and the type entered French naval service in 1978.

Powered by the SNECMA Atar 8K-50 and equipped with an integrated navigation/attack system and Agave radar, it became especially famous for its maritime-strike role with the AM39 Exocet.

Key Aspects of the Super Étendard History:

  • Development and Origin: Created to modernize French carrier aviation with improved propulsion, wings, avionics, and weapons integration.
  • Military and Combat Operations:
    • French Navy: Served in combat from the Middle East and Balkans to Afghanistan and Libya, especially in upgraded SEM form.
    • Falklands/Malvinas War – 1982: Argentine Super Étendards armed with Exocet missiles struck HMS Sheffield and Atlantic Conveyor.
    • Iran-Iraq War: Iraq temporarily leased five French aircraft for maritime-strike missions.
  • Foreign Operators:
    • Argentina: Ordered 14 aircraft and became the principal foreign operator.
    • Iraq: Temporarily leased five French aircraft during the 1980s.
  • Upgrades and Retirement: France upgraded the type to Super Étendard Modernisé standard and retired it in 2016. Argentina ended operations with its remaining aircraft in 2023.
  • Design and Armament: Single-seat carrier strike jet capable of carrying Exocet missiles, bombs, rockets, air-to-air missiles, reconnaissance stores, precision weapons, and French nuclear weapons.

France ordered 71 Super Étendards, with another 14 ordered by Argentina.
