Historical Context
The Dassault Mirage F1 was a Mach 2 fighter developed as a more flexible successor to the early Mirage III. It first flew on December 23, 1966 and entered French Air Force service in the 1970s.
Unlike the delta-wing Mirage III, the F1 used a conventional swept wing with high-lift devices, giving it better low-speed handling and shorter takeoff and landing performance.
Key Aspects of the Mirage F1 History:
- Development and Origin: Developed as a compact, exportable Mach 2 fighter with the Atar 9K engine and conventional swept wing.
- Military and Combat Operations:
- French Air Force: Served in interception, reconnaissance, and attack roles and deployed on operations including Chad, the 1991 Gulf War, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Africa.
- Foreign Combat: Iraqi, Moroccan, Libyan, and other F1 operators used the aircraft in major regional conflicts.
- Foreign Operators:
- Iraq, Morocco, Libya, South Africa, Spain and others: Operated interceptor, strike, and reconnaissance variants.
- Upgrades and Retirement: French F1C, F1CR, and F1CT variants received successive avionics and mission upgrades before final French retirement in 2014.
- Design and Armament: Single-seat fighter with Cyrano radar, twin 30 mm DEFA cannon, air-to-air missiles, bombs, rockets, guided weapons, and external fuel tanks.
More than 700 Mirage F1s were built, and the type became one of Dassault's most important export fighters of the 1970s and 1980s.
