Historical Context
The Dassault Mirage 5 was a simplified strike-oriented derivative of the Mirage IIIE. Defined in 1965 and first flown on May 19, 1967, it removed much of the Mirage IIIE's radar equipment to make room for additional fuel and a heavier external weapons load.
The French Mirage 5F combined the basic Mirage 5 concept with Armée de l'Air requirements and served as a fast tactical strike aircraft.
Key Aspects of the Mirage 5 History:
- Development and Origin: Created as a lower-cost, clear-weather tactical support aircraft with more fuel and more weapon stations than the Mirage IIIE.
- Military and Combat Operations:
- French Air Force: Operated 50 Mirage 5F aircraft for tactical strike and fighter duties.
- International Service: Mirage 5 family aircraft served in numerous regional conflicts with export customers in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia.
- Foreign Operators:
- Belgium, Pakistan, Egypt, Libya and others: Operated national Mirage 5 versions with differing avionics and weapons fits.
- Upgrades and Retirement: Many operators modernized Mirage 5 airframes with improved avionics, radar, and engines; France retired its Mirage III/5 family from operational units in the 1990s.
- Design and Armament: Single-seat delta-wing strike fighter with twin 30 mm cannon and multiple pylons for bombs, rockets, missiles, and external fuel tanks. This model represents the configuration named in the product title.
The Mirage 5 became one of Dassault's greatest export successes and demonstrated the adaptability of the Mirage III airframe.
