Historical Context
The Dassault MD 450 Ouragan was France's first domestically designed postwar jet fighter to enter large-scale production. The prototype first flew on February 28, 1949, and the type served with the French Air Force from the early 1950s.
The Ouragan established the basic design lineage that led directly to the Mystère and later Dassault fighter families.
Key Aspects of the MD 450 Ouragan History:
- Development and Origin: Designed as a straightforward single-engine jet fighter using conventional swept-wing construction and proven postwar aerodynamic concepts.
- Military and Combat Operations:
- French Air Force: Served as an interceptor and fighter-bomber and also equipped the Patrouille de France.
- Foreign Combat: Israeli Ouragans saw combat in the 1956 Suez conflict and later operations, while Indian aircraft served in regional conflicts.
- Foreign Operators:
- India: Became the first major foreign customer for the Ouragan.
- Israel: Operated the type as a fighter-bomber.
- Upgrades and Retirement: The Ouragan was progressively replaced in French service by the Mystère series and left French operational service in the early 1960s.
- Design and Armament: Single-seat jet fighter with four 20 mm cannon and external capacity for bombs and rockets.
The Ouragan was the first French military aircraft exported in significant numbers after World War II and laid the industrial foundation for later Dassault combat aircraft.
