Fast and relatively lightly protected, she helped establish the basic design approach followed by later Japanese carriers. Soryu served in Carrier Division 2, took part in the attack on Pearl Harbor and subsequent operations across Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean, and was lost at Midway.
