Historical Information
Hiryu was a modified and enlarged development of the Soryu design, commissioned in 1939. She featured greater range and protection and was visually distinctive for her port-side island. Serving with Soryu in Carrier Division 2, Hiryu participated in Pearl Harbor, Wake Island, the Dutch East Indies campaign, Darwin, and the Indian Ocean raid. At Midway she survived the initial attacks that disabled three other Japanese carriers and launched counterstrikes before being fatally hit later that day.
