Historical Information
Akagi was originally laid down as an Amagi-class battlecruiser and converted to an aircraft carrier under the Washington Naval Treaty. After a major reconstruction completed in 1938, she emerged with a full-length flight deck and a distinctive port-side island. As flagship of Vice Admiral Chuichi Nagumo’s First Air Fleet, Akagi led the six-carrier striking force that attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941. She later participated in operations across the Pacific and Indian Ocean before being fatally damaged at the Battle of Midway.
