The USS Essex (CV-9) was an Essex-class fleet aircraft carrier operated by the United States Navy. She was one of 24 completed ships in the class from 32 ordered and was commissioned on December 31, 1942.
Essex served in Pacific operations. Her major assignments included Marcus Island, Wake Island, the Marshall Islands, the Marianas, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.
