Historical Information
Turkish aircraft tail markings changed several times during the twentieth century. During the long period when the red square served as the principal aircraft insignia, aircraft fins were commonly painted red and displayed the national white crescent and star.
In 1972, the Turkish Air Force reintroduced the red-white-red circular roundel and adopted the national flag on the fin. The resulting tail marking features Turkey's instantly recognizable red field with a white crescent and five-pointed star. Low-visibility versions may be used on some modern operational aircraft.
This marking has appeared on a wide range of Turkish aircraft including the F-100 Super Sabre, F-104 Starfighter, F-4 Phantom II, F-5, F-16 Fighting Falcon, C-130 Hercules, KC-135R, trainers, and other support aircraft.
