The A-1H Skyraider (formerly AD-6) was primarily used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps for close air support and ground attack during the Korean War (1950–1953) and Vietnam War (1960s-1970s), notably conducting the last Navy Skyraider mission in 1968. It was also operated by the US Air Force and South Vietnamese Air Force in Vietnam.
Key operational details:
- Conflict Service: Primarily Korea and Vietnam. It was used in Vietnam for Search and Rescue (SAR) and "Sandy" missions, providing air cover for combat rescues.
- Key Roles: Close ground support, strike missions, and interdiction.
- Users: U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, South Vietnamese Air Force, and foreign operators including France.
- Operational Success: Valued for its ability to carry a massive, heavy payload—comparable to a WWII bomber—and its long loiter time over battlefields.
The A-1H (AD-6) was renowned for its survivability and capability to deliver precise fire in close support roles.
