The AD-4 Skyraider was primarily used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during the Korean War (1950–1953) and subsequently in the Vietnam War, renowned as a durable close-air-support, attack, and "Sandy" rescue cover aircraft. It also saw service with the French Air Force and the British Royal Navy.
Key Areas and Uses of the AD-4 Skyraider:
- Korean War (U.S. Navy/Marine Corps): Used extensively from aircraft carriers like the USS Philippine Sea for ground attack, bombing, and close air support.
- Vietnam War (USAF/US Navy): Served in the early years of the conflict. The US Air Force used them for rescue support ("Sandy" missions) to protect combat helicopters, while the Navy utilized them in attacks on North Vietnam.
- French Air Force: Used in Southeast Asia through the late 1960s to 1977.
- Royal Navy: Operated 50 AD-4W variants for Airborne Early Warning (AEW).
