Historical Information
In Northwest Europe, British armoured divisions used numbered Arm of Service (AoS) plates with colored backgrounds to identify their engineers, artillery, reconnaissance, transport, medical and other support units. The number and color identified a unit's place within the formation. AoS plates generally appeared on the vehicle's right front, often on a mudguard, fender or bumper, with the divisional sign on the opposite front side. Actual arrangements varied by vehicle and date.
For unit identification and marking guidance, see UK Tank Markings – Armoured Formation AoS Markings. Infantry and specialist-formation assignments may differ from the general armoured-division reference.
