The Kangaroo was developed from the earlier Blackburn G.P. seaplane, a floatplane designed for anti-submarine warfare. The "R.T.1" designation stood for "Reconnaissance Torpedo Type 1". It was a landplane built from wood and fabric, with a wingspan of over 74 feet, and its wings could be folded for storage. Early models were fitted with Rolls-Royce Falcon II engines, later upgraded to the more powerful Rolls-Royce Falcon III.
