The Bell OH-58A Kiowa was the original production version of the Kiowa family, entering U.S. Army service in 1969 as a light observation and scout helicopter. It was primarily used for reconnaissance, artillery spotting, command-and-control, and liaison missions.

 

Major Areas of Service

Vietnam War (1969–1973)

  • The OH-58A saw its first combat service in the Vietnam War.
  • Used for:
    • Aerial reconnaissance
    • Artillery spotting
    • Target acquisition
    • Escort and observation missions
  • Often operated at low altitude over hostile territory, making it vulnerable to ground fire.

United States

  • Served extensively with the United States Army and Army National Guard units.
  • Performed training, border security, disaster-response support, and observation missions.

Europe (Cold War)

  • Stationed in West Germany and other NATO locations.
  • Supported reconnaissance and observation missions along the NATO–Warsaw Pact frontier.
  • Participated in major NATO exercises throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

South Korea

  • Deployed with U.S. Army aviation units supporting the defense of South Korea.
  • Conducted reconnaissance and liaison duties near the Demilitarized Zone.

 

International Service

The OH-58A was exported to several countries, including:

  • Austria
  • Greece
  • Taiwan
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Australia

These operators used the aircraft primarily for observation, training, utility transport, and reconnaissance missions.
