The B-52H Stratofortress, operational since 1961 and still in service, is a long-range, nuclear-capable bomber utilized heavily in conventional combat roles. It has been used in the Vietnam War (Operation Linebacker II), Gulf War (Desert Storm), NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, Iraq War, Afghanistan, the fight against ISIS, and recently against Iran. 

 

Key Deployment Areas and Operations:

  • Vietnam War: Crucial for massive bombing campaigns such as Operation Linebacker II in 1972.
  • Gulf War (Desert Storm): Responsible for 40 percent of all weapons dropped by coalition forces.
  • Operation Allied Force (Yugoslavia): Deployed for cruise missile attacks and bombing Serb positions.
  • War on Terror (Afghanistan & Iraq): Provided long-term loitering, close air support, and precision-guided munition delivery.
  • Operations in Syria/Iraq (ISIS): Performed approximately 1,800 sorties between 2016 and 2018.
  • Recent Conflict (Iran): Used in 2026 for strikes against Iranian naval vessels.
  • Global Presence: Regularly deployed to places like Diego Garcia, Guam, Australia, Spain, and the UK. 

     

  • Operational Context:
    The B-52H is known for its ability to carry a massive, varied payload (up to 70,000 lbs), including AGM-86B cruise missiles, AGM-142, AGM-154, AGM-158, and Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs). They are heavily utilized in maritime roles for surveillance and, if necessary, mining. Currently, all active H-models are managed by the Air Force Global Strike Command.
