Historical Context
The B-52D Stratofortress saw extensive service in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War (1965–1973), including Operations Arc Light and Linebacker II, with many modified under the "Big Belly" program to carry high-capacity conventional bomb loads, according to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force (.mil) and Air Force Museum. It was primarily stationed at Andersen AFB, Guam, and U-Tapao RTAFB, Thailand.
Key Deployment Details for the B-52D:
- Vietnam War: Heavily used for carpet bombing in South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, as well as industrial targeting in North Vietnam.
- Operation Linebacker II (1972): Played a major role in the "Christmas Bombings" of North Vietnam.
- Cold War Sentinel: While designed for nuclear deterrence, the D-model was optimized for conventional, long-duration bombing missions.
- "Big Belly" Modification: Modified to carry up to 108 conventional bombs (compared to 27 previously) for massive area bombing.
- Service Life: Retired in 1983.
The B-52D operated primarily out of Guam and Thailand, providing tactical support and strategic bombing throughout Southeast Asia.
This is a Flight Deck Decals exclusive model. The print is beautifully detailed. This is an excessively big bird. It is printed in 3 pieces: fuselage, port, and starboard wings.
