The B-1B Lancer has been used extensively as a conventional heavy bomber in major U.S. military campaigns since 1998, with significant roles in Iraq, Yugoslavia (Kosovo), Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria. It acts as a long-range, high-payload strike aircraft, often providing close air support and precision bombing, notably in operations like Desert Fox, Allied Force, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom.
Major Combat Operations and Deployments
- Iraq (Desert Fox 1998, Iraqi Freedom 2003–2010s): Performed extensive bombing missions, delivering a large percentage of joint direct attack munitions (JDAMs).
- Yugoslavia (Allied Force 1999): Six B-1Bs flew less than 2% of combat sorties but delivered over 20% of the total ordnance.
- Afghanistan (Enduring Freedom 2001–2010s): Supported ground forces with close air support, at times delivering 40% of the total tonnage.
- Libya & Syria (2011–2018): Used in intervention operations, including 2018 strikes targeting chemical weapons facilities.
- Iran/Middle East (2025–2026): Deployed to the UK and Middle East for strikes against regional targets, with recent sorties originating from the U.S. for long-range strike missions.
Key Operational Capabilities
- Massive Payload: Known for its high-volume, precision-guided weapon delivery, often referred to as a "heavy hammer".
- Long-Range Strike: Regularly flies long-duration, non-stop missions from its home base at Ellsworth Air Force Base, SD to targets in the Middle East, showcasing its reach and "loiter time".
- Modernization: As of 2025–2026, the Air Force operates 45 B-1B bombers for conventional, standoff weapons capability until the full arrival of the B-21.
