The AV-8B Harrier II Plus (HII+), featuring radar for all-weather capability, was primarily used by the U.S. Marine Corps, Italy, and Spain from the mid-1990s onward, with extensive combat service in the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria. It was often deployed on amphibious assault ships or in forward operating areas, providing close air support and reconnaissance. 

 

Key operational uses and deployments included:

  • Operation Allied Force (Balkans): Deployed on USS Kearsarge during the 1999 Kosovo conflict.
  • Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan): Enabled operations from forward-deployed sites starting in 2007.
  • Operation Iraqi Freedom: Provided precision air support for ground forces during the 2003 invasion and subsequent operations.
  • Other Operations: Involved in operations against Houthi rebels, missions in Libya, and Somalia, often with USMC and Italian Navy teams.
  • Maritime Deployment: Actively launched from amphibious ships in the Caribbean and other sea areas for expeditionary operations. 

     

The AV-8B Harrier II Plus is distinguished by its, enabling it to act in both defensive and offensive roles, such as using LITENING targeting pods. It is being replaced by the F-35B Lightning II, with the final squadron transitions expected by 2028.
