Historical Information
The Arsenal VG-33 was a French single-seat light fighter developed by Arsenal de l'Aéronautique in the late 1930s as part of a program for a fast, lightweight fighter that could be built largely from wood and conserve strategic materials. Derived from the VG-30 series, it first flew in April 1939 and offered performance competitive with France's newer fighters. Production began shortly before the German invasion, but delays and the collapse of France prevented large-scale service.
Key details regarding the usage of the Arsenal VG-33 include:
Combat Service: Entered service during the Battle of France in May-June 1940, but its operational career was extremely brief and it did not see extensive combat before the armistice.
Operational Roles: Single-seat fighter, interceptor, and local air-defense aircraft.
Service Use: Operated in very small numbers by the French Armée de l'Air during the final weeks of the 1940 campaign; captured examples were later examined by German authorities.
Notable Operations: A small number reached active French units, including GC I/55, during the final days of the Battle of France, but the type arrived too late and in too few numbers to influence the campaign.
Retirement: Front-line French service effectively ended with the June 1940 armistice; surviving aircraft were stored, captured, or used for evaluation.
