Historical Background
The Ansaldo A.1 Balilla was a late-war Italian single-seat fighter developed during World War I. Based on structural ideas used in the successful SVA family, the Balilla was tested during 1917 and entered limited operational service during 1918.
The type arrived too late to play a major role in the conflict, but it represented an important step in Italy's development of domestically designed fighter aircraft and continued in production after the Armistice.
