Historical Information

The Amiot 354 was a streamlined French twin-engine medium bomber developed from the Amiot 350 family. Entering service only shortly before the German offensive of May 1940, it combined relatively high speed with a modern all-metal design but arrived too late and in too few numbers to influence the outcome of the campaign.

Key details regarding the usage of the Amiot 354 include:

  • Combat Service: Saw limited operational service during the Battle of France in May and June 1940.
  • Operational Roles: Medium bombing, armed reconnaissance, and long-range operational missions.
  • Service Use: Used by Armée de l'Air bomber groups as the new Amiot 351/354 family began replacing older French bombers.
  • Notable Operations: The type flew armed reconnaissance and bombing missions during the 1940 campaign, including early operations over the Low Countries while French units were still converting to the aircraft.
  • Retirement: The collapse of France ended its large-scale introduction; surviving aircraft were dispersed, evacuated, or later used in limited Vichy and Axis-controlled service.
